This appears to confirm why some builds still work above the reported 3392 KB limit: 0x3E0000-0x40000=3712 KB

Initial Flash Instructions

THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR THE VERSION 2 MODEL ONLY! For V3 see HERE.

  1. READ the Peacock announcement
  2. Download a trailed build from the broadcom K26 directory, filename: NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR2000v2.chk.
    • Note: the broadcom_K3X build directory has the WNR2000v2, but it is too big to flash. 3392 KB (possibly 3712 KB) Limit, flash anything bigger and you will brick your device. See Where do I download firmware? for links.
  3. Push the reset button on the back of the router until the lights flash (or 30s), then release it.
  4. Attach a cable to the router and disable any wireless on your computer. Make sure the cable goes from your computer Ethernet connection to a LAN port (Not WAN port) on your router.
  5. Wait until you have a connection with the router
  6. Login to the router at http://192.168.1.1/
  7. At the password prompt, put admin/admin or admin/password for the username/password
  8. Go to the Router Upgrade link on the left side of the router gui and click on it
  9. Navigate to and Choose the file that you downloaded, double checking that it is the mini-WNR2000v2.chk file and not some recipe your grandma sent you or some other router file
  10. When it asks you if you want to upgrade to a different version, click on yes.
  11. Wait FIVE full earth minutes after the upgrade appears to have finished. You can watch the lights on the front if you need something to do. As long as they are changing, you need to sit quietly and wait! If you screw this up you WILL brick your router. When the green light and the blue light and the port light that you are plugged into have all stopped blinking, you should be all right as long as you have waited FIVE FULL MINUTES!
  12. Log onto the router at http://192.168.1.1/
  13. Set the username and password by TYPING in the boxes and hitting enter.
  14. Reset the router as outlined in note 1 of the peacock announcement. THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT!
  15. Repeat steps 12 and 13 and go in and configure your router. Hit save as you make your configurations before you switch to another tab, and when you are done, hit APPLY.

Upgrading to Later Builds

Flash Size

The WNR2000v2 flash size is reportedly limited to 3392 KB (3,473,408 bytes). This limits the builds that can be used on this unit, INCLUDING the trailed builds. For example, on older builds, the last Brainslayer MINI build that will work is 18777, and the last OpenVPN-SMALL build is 18688. Find new build links here.

Update 2015/03/25

It has been reported that the latest current build (26490) was able to be flashed on this device. That indicates that some of the size restrictions reported in the 2013/11/07 section above may not be accurate. See details on forum HERE, and/or flash chip size limitations as detailed in Note 4 of the peacock thread.

Successfully upgraded (after initial flash) to dd-wrt.v24-33413_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin

Overclocking

Attempt at your own risk - it is recommended to add a headsink and/or improve cooling.
The BCM4716 uses the pll20mhz_table from hndmips.c, and the CFE allows overclocking.

  • Use the GUI, or (for more options) set clkfreq based on the pll20mhz_table's {cpu,ddr,axi} settings.
  • If manually setting, also set the nvram "overclocking" parameter to the {cpu} speed, for the GUI:
nvram set clkfreq={cpu,ddr,axi}
nvram set overclocking={cpu}
nvram commit && reboot
  • The RAM (Samsung K4H561638J-LCCC) is DDR400, rated for 200 MHz (the 'ddr' speed from hndmips.c).
  • In one test, an overclock at 400,200,100 without a heatsink produced a max SoC surface temperature of only 53.8degC (128degF) after several speedtest runs. `ifconfig` showed no errors.

Bad Flash Recovery

A brick from flashing too large an image can be recovered via a pin-short to enter TFTP mode as described in this thread http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=81013 . Timing is very important for the short, please read the entire thread for instructions. This is not without risk!

Notes

Forum device thread

WNR2000v2 has a known bug with firmware 18777 and below (& 26490): LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 and LAN4 port work properly under 10M/100M half/full duplex, but the LED display are incorrect: LAN1 and LAN2 always amber; LAN 3 always green; LAN4 LED is correct, it will display amber for 10M connection and green for 100M networking.
