How To Flash

                                                              == WRT54GS v2 ==
                                       Chipset - BCM4712 -- Ram - 32mb -- Flash - 8mb
As of 3/2/11 these are the following files you will need to flash dd-wrt to your WRT54GS v2 router.
It is Recommended to use v24 SP2[Beta] Build 13064
Anything you do to your router is at YOUR OWN RISK!

Factory Firmware - WRT54GSv3_4.71.4.001_fw.bin

  • Be aware that applying the firmware update WRT54GSv3_4.71.4.001_fw.bin to Version 1.0 WRT54GS routers can Kill your router.
  • Notice the File name says WRT54GSv3, I have confirmed with Linksys that this file is good for different versions.

Initial Flash-

DD-WRT Flash - dd-wrt.v24-13064_VINT_mega.bin

Before we begin, make sure you have done the following:

  1. Turned off your Anti-Virus & Firewall
  2. Turned off your Wireless Connections
  3. Use IE to flash via the Web GUI and not Firefox, as some users have issues with Firefox
  4. DO NOT Do a 30/30/30 HARD RESET - Good Chance you will brick your router
    1. Do a Reset by keeping the router powered on and holding the reset button on the back for 30 seconds
                                                                 FLASHING
At this time the only thing connected to the router is the Power and Ethernet to PC
The Steps Listed Below Are For Flashing via the Web GUI - NOT TFTP"
  1. Open IE and enter the following address: 192.168.1.1
    1. User = (Leave Blank)
    2. Password = admin
      1. If you don't know the Login Info, Do a Reset. This will restore the router back to factory defaults.
  2. Look at the top Right Corner and make sure your Firmware is at 4.71.4
    1. If your Firmware IS up to date, Go to: Administration > Factory Defaults > Restore > Apply Settings
      1. Wait 5 minutes for the Router to Re-boot
    2. If your Firmware is NOT up to date, Go to: Administration > Firmware Upgrade (select the 4.71.4 file that you saved from above) > Upgrade
      1. Wait 5 minutes for the Router to Re-boot
  3. Reset
  4. Open IE and enter the following address: 192.168.1.1 and Login with the Default Info in Step 1
  5. Go to: Administration > Firmware Upgrade (select the dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin) > Upgrade
    1. Wait 5 minutes for the Router to Re-boot
  6. Reset
  7. Power Cycle (Unplug the Router from the power and wait 10 seconds before you plug it back in
  8. Open IE and enter the following address: 192.168.1.1
    1. User = root
    2. Password = admin
      1. You don't need to enter new Login info yet since you will be flashing a different version of dd-wrt and will need to set it once you are done with the next flash
  9. Go to: Administration > Firmware Upgrade (select the dd-wrt.v24-13064_VINT_mega.bin) > Upgrade
  10. Reset
  11. Wait 5 minutes for the Router to Re-boot
  12. Power Cycle
  13. Open IE and enter the following address: 192.168.1.1
  14. Enter a New User Name and Password
  15. Now you can enjoy your DD-WRT Firmware and change the settings you need to change

Many thanks for this firmware and to those who have posted info on how to flash this model. Info was mixed and scattered, but after enough reading, I was able to follow the steps above and successfully flash my router without bricking it :) If there is something wrong, please fix it or PM me so I can. PLEASE don't eliminate the resets and power cycles to ensure that you will be successful with your flashing.

                                                                                                                  Poke 07:56, 3 March 2011 (CET)

Other Notes

[comment added 3/23/08 by Bugman916] Just installed dd-wrt on my WRT54GS v2.0 router. I started with RC 6.2 dd-wrt.v24_mini_wrt54gs through the Linksys interface. Then I used the new dd-wrt mini interface to install RC6.2 dd-wrt.v24_std_generic. Everything seems "ok", I had no problems getting firmware installed. reminder Default login/pw .. root/admin

I had no trouble installing dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin onto my v2 WRT54GS. I didn't need to install mini first, didn't need to play with FTP, just installed it via the firmware update page. It worked without using the reset button.

[comment added 7/18/08 by koolkat] Does NOT need VxWorks killer to install due to the fact that factory firmware is linux based. Installed VINTage Mega firmware after installing VINTage standard, had no problems at all.

"[comment added 10/05/08 by mikeandmonika]" Installed DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/26/08) mega-special (upgraded from HyperWRT through GUI). Upgrade took approximately 20 minutes to complete, but all is well and working great.

[comment added 12/20/08 by Corehop] Successfully installed dd-wrt.v24-9517_VINT_std.bin from factory linksys web GUI. Then tried upgrading to dd-wrt.v24-9517_VINT_mega.bin using the DDWRT web GUI, but when the router reset, it would not respond to pings and I had to short pins 15 and 16 on the flash chip and TFTP the Linksys firmware.

Comment galengish at 10:34 (EST) on 06 Jan 2009: I flashed a Linksys WRT54GS v2 router last night from original firmware to DD_WRT v24 (05/20/2008) std in one shot. This was performed via Internet Explorer and the Web GUI via Ethernet cable. The flash was successful on the first try and it is now successfully working as a client-bridge with another WRT54GS v7 running original Linksys firmware.

Comment Milkman at 8:47 (CST) on 26 Mar 2009: I just installed v24-sp1 mega from the Linksys firmware and it seems to have installed without a hitch, although I haven't had a chance to play around much yet. It is indicating "Error" on the title bar in my browser, but this may be associated with the lack of WAN connectivity for the router at this point. Will update should I find any significant errors/problems. (I hope I get the formatting correct here, please bear with me as I am new to wiki submissions)

Updated 10 Apr 2009: OK, backing up to v24 doesn't cause the "error" reporting on the browser (like in Электронный документооборот, seems to be something with the SP1 release. Haven't checked change logs, but seems very happy with v24 mega.

comment [rushessays.com] still trying to install

[comment added 3/22/2010 by geohey] I followed the flash instructions for WRT54GS v1.0 with no problems at all.

I also followed the flash instructions for WRT54GS v1.0 (and used the same firmware as v1.0) and it worked. One caveat: I had to do one extra powercycle (unplug it for 30 seconds) after installing the mini version.

[comment added 2/4/2011 by Ryan] Just got done successfully flashing a second WRTGS54 v2 router. The first one was done about 10 months ago and has worked flawlessly. Found a second one at a thrift store for $2 the other day, flashed it and been testing it for a few hrs with no problems at all. Like others have done, I simply flashed the Standard dd-wrt.v24-9517_VINT_std.bin on directly from the Linksys interface using IE and ethernet connection. Did not use VxWorks killer. Was done both times in just mins.
