Flashing instructions for the E1500

After using the trailed build file for the initial flash (yes the file with the router name in it) only use nv64k builds to upgrade with or you will brick your unit. Don't confuse this unit with some of the other Linksys E-Series units that use nv60k builds, this one uses nv64k builds!

  1. Read the Peacock Announcement carefully.
  2. Disconnect all cables and wireless clients.
  3. Do a 30/30/30 reset on router
  4. Connect 1 Lan cable to pc doing the flash.
  5. Log into Linkysys Web Interface Firmware Upgrade page at 192.168.1.1 and flash the firmware E1500 Trailed Initial Flash Build
  6. Wait 5 minutes to assure flash integrity.
  7. Power cycle by unplugging the E1500 for 10 seconds.
  8. Plug the E1500 back in and wait about 2 minutes until it finishes booting.
  9. Do a 30/30/30 reset on router. Another power cycle may be required after the hard reset as noted by some forum users.
  10. Wait 3 minutes and log into web interface.
  11. Start configuring and using dd-wrt.
  • After the initial flash - should you want to flash to a build with more features you can use a k2.6 nv64k BIG or mega build or any of the other build flavors that are of your liking for features - so long as they fit into the 8 meg flash, flashing builds bigger than 8 meg may result in flash failure or even worse, may BRICK so be watchful of build file sizes that you download.

Build information

As noted in bold at the beginning of the flashing instructions, only use builds with nv64k in the name for upgrading - otherwise follow the initial flash instructions above if you are going from stock to dd-wrt, any other builds for upgrading an existing dd-wrt install without nv64k in the name will brick your router! This unit was supported with build 18946 or greater, this means you cannot use a build with a number lesser than 18946. For the safest results, use builds that are linked within this wiki as they have most likely been forum tested with ok reported results.

Recovering from a bad flash (10/2016)

I've found these for five bucks at the local Goodwill, so they are worth toying with. I have DD-WRT v3.0 r29519 mega (04/25/16) running on it's cousin, the e1200, that's a K3X build. Works great!

Sometimes when flashing or changing settings on /beta builds (K3X), you'll run into a boot where the power light will blink on a regular on-off about once a second. When you set a fixed IP on your ethernet port, and open http://192.168.1.1 you'll see something called a "Management Mode Firmware Recovery" screen. It's sort of like a tftp recovery, a basic web interface to upload a firmware.

A couple of notes:

  • You only have a brief amount of time to begin your upload. Wait more than 30 seconds or so, and you will have to power down and up the router, refresh the screen, and try it again. Wait longer than 30 seconds, and the page is unresponsive, and won't accept uploads. When you are successful, on your Firefox status bar, it will show the upload progress (goes in a split second, very quickly on mini-build flashes), and then within seconds, the router goes to flashing the firmware, resetting, etc. You should definitely see something happening with the power light within 10 seconds, probably immediately. I use Firefox quite often to troubleshoot buggy networks or flaky connections to routers (over experimental links), because you can reduce the number of simultaneous connections opened by the browser to four. Chrome does not have this open (although many people have asked for it, Google programmers have been typically arrogant over adding the option to adjust it down, and this also affects people with certain kinds of WAN links, that Chrome has a tendency to flood the number of available open connections. Google's response is to upgrade your hardware.) Also Firefox has a status bar.

Reverting to stock firmware

It has been asked about: "how do i revert back to stock firmware?" and the answer is download the stock firmware image from the manufacturer's website, reset the router back to defaults using a 30-30-30 hard reset, then flash the stock image from within the dd-wrt webgui. After 5 minutes it should finish, you will then need to do another 30-30-30 reset and then access the stock webgui @ 192.168.1.1
