Scope

This article gives directions for installing DSL service with DD-WRT, applicable also when changing over to DSL from cable.

Background

DSL providers typically configure the modem in ways that are easiest for them and not optimal for the end user. These setups preclude using some of DD-WRT's desirable features resulting in diminished performance and security. The best configuration is as with cable: modem in bridge mode and all routing/security performed by the router.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Obtain your network name and password.
    • Network name is often the same as account name, but network password is nearly always different from account password.
    • Is most easily grabbed when the account is first set up.
    • Is not generally retrievable from the modem's GUI.
    • You 'own' this information. Don't let the service provider charge for it.
    • This is a must-have. Can not proceed without it.
  2. Wire directly from DSL modem to PC and test for good connection.
    • If a laptop, disable wireless.
    • If resurrecting an old modem, repairing a previous disaster, etc., hard reset the modem by holding down the Reset button until red/orange LED flashes. (Hard reset is otherwise not necessary.)
    • Verify connection by surfing to one or more websites.
    • If unable to connect, work with service provider to get running.
  3. Access modem's GUI, set configuration
    • Point browser to same address as used for initial setup. (ATT modems use 192.168.1.254)
    • Here, three items need to be changed. A detailed example is given for a typical ATT modem in the next step; adapt to your hardware:
      • Change device IP and subnet mask to non-conflicting address 192.168.100.1, subnet mask 255.255.0.0
      • Turn Off DHCP service
      • Set BRIDGE mode
    • The following is for a Westell model E90-610030-06 (FW 03.08.02). The above three changes are implemented:
      • Pick 'Home Network' then 'DHCP', change 'Device IP Address' line to 192.168.100.1, change Subnet Mask to 255.255.0.0, then uncheck 'LAN DHCP Server Enable' box and hit 'Save Changes'.
      • While the device self-reboots, change the connection on PC to be compatible with the new settings: IP 192.168.100.2, Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0, Default Gateway 192.168.100.1 (In winXP, these three items can be found under network properties, 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties', click 'Use the following IP address' and enter the numbers.)
      • After connection re-establishes with new settings (may take a minute), log back on router at 192.168.100.1, pick 'Broadband DSL Line' and select 'Configure Connection', on the 'Protocol' line pick 'Bridge Ethernet' (screen should change to show the line: 'Bridge Type: Bridge' ), then 'Save and Restart Connection'.
  4. Cleanup and prepare router for DSL connection
    • Unplug modem, then Ethernet cable
    • Return PC's TCP/IP settings to normal (usually 'automatic')
    • Connect to DD-WRT router and browse to GUI (usually at 192.168.1.1)
    • On Setup tab, on Basic Setup page, change Connection Type to PPPoE and key in User Name and Password (from step 1.), and Save. Unplug router.
  5. Wire for normal operation and go
    • Connect modem and router by Ethernet cable
    • Plug in modem and allow to sync (DSL light stops blinking)
    • Plug in router
    • Done. Happy DSL!
