New Wiki Material-Client Bridge

The instructions that work the best is to follow the "Repeater Bridge" instructions. The only difference is on step 5 leave out the entire Virtual Interfaces section. Here is the link. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

First of all, do not even try to do client bridge with dd-wrt SP1. It won't work.

The information below this section is really overly complex. Once this new info is reviewed and checked for accuracy, the unnecessary info should be deleted.

The router that you are trying to connect to is the primary router. The router you are configuring is the client bridge(CB) router. You don't need to worry about the primary router as long a s you set your CB to the SAME subnet. What this means is, if the primary router has an IP of 192.168.A.X, you need to set the CB router to an IP of 192.168.A.Z. Most primary routers will be at 192.168.1.1. So, when you are configuring your CB router, set it to 192.168.1.9

With that in mind, here is how to configure it.

  1. Download a recommended build for your router. DO NOT USE SP1. If you are using a broadcom router, read the peacock thread prior to starting. http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=51486 Use one of those recommended builds.
  2. Do a HARD reset on your router.
  3. Connect a cable from your computer to the LAN port on your router.
  4. Set your computer to a static IP address of 192.168.1.9
  5. Set your browser to 192.168.1.1 and open the dd-wrt webgui.
  6. You should be asked to change your password and username. Carefully type these in. If you aren't asked for a password and username, do a hard reset, this time doing it properly! Hit change password.
  7. Go FIRST to wireless, wireless security and enter the security type and key that matches your primary router.
  8. Hit SAVE, (or APPLY if you wish to)
  9. Go to the wireless, basic settings page and change the wireless mode to Client Bridge.
  10. Your wireless network mode should be set to the same as the primary router.
  11. Set the wireless channel to match your primary router channel
  12. If you are using N only or Mixed with N, set your wireless channel width to match your primary
  13. Set the wireless network name to exactly the same as your primary router. Make sure spelling and capitalization match.
  14. Set Ack timing to 0 unless you have a long distance (>300 meter) link
  15. Hit SAVE at the bottom. Then hit APPLY.
  16. Check to make sure all the configurations, including the mode, saved and the mode is still client bridge. If any changed, fix them, and save again.
  17. Goto Setup, basic setup and enter a router Local IP address of 192.168.1.6. Leave subnet mask at 255.255.255.0.
  18. Set the Gateway IP to your primary router. (Likely 192.168.1.1)
  19. Leave Local DNS blank
  20. Check Assign Wan port to a switch, if you wish to.
  21. Change your timezone and DST to match where you are.
  22. Hit Apply.
  23. Set your browser to 192.168.1.6 and login to your router
  24. Goto Security, Firewall. Under Block Wan Requests, uncheck everything but "Filter Multicast" (Leave Filter multicast checked).
  25. Hit Save
  26. Disable SPI Firewall
  27. Hit Apply.
  28. Go to setup/advanced routing and change the operating mode from "gateway" to router. Hit Apply.
  29. Set your computer back to auto IP and auto DNS.

You are done. Configure any other settings you wish at this point.

PLEASE NOTE:

(requires version 2.3 or greater for GUI setup)

We are currently experiencing Client Bridge and Repeater Bridge problems when the host is a non-Linux based router. If you are experiencing problem or would like to report a non-linux router as a problem please post in this thread. We are trying to keep this list up to date. Client Bridge is said to be working with the old V23 SP2 build...but not the newest V24 builds.

V24 builds

My setup using V24 builds redhawk

==Instructions== added 05/29/08 - Security added 06/06/08

A very simple step-by-step instruction to connect a Router running DD-WRT V24 firmware in Client Bridge Mode.

Confirmed working on V24 Pre-SP2

To enable Bridge-Mode between two Routers, the Primary router has to be in AP mode. The Secondary router running DD-WRT as Client Bridged

  1. Do a hard reset (30/30/30) on Client (DD-WRT) Router
  2. Connect to the secondary router via wired LAN port
  3. Open the Wireless -> Basic Settings tab
    • Wireless Mode : Client Bridge
    • Wireless Network Mode : Match Primary Router
    • Wireless Network Name(SSID) : Match Primary Router
    • Wireless Channel : Match Primary Router
    • Wireless SSID Broadcast : Enable (not found on newer builds)
    • Network Configuration : Bridged
    • Save Settings
  4. Open the Wireless-> Wireless Security tab
    • Set your Encryption to either WEP or WPA, or WPA2-Personal
    • Select TKIP, AES, or TKIP + AES
      • Note - as of 07/15/08 - TKIP + AES is now working on the Client Bridge.- redhawk
    • Enter your encryption key to match the Primary router
    • Save Settings
  5. Open the Setup -> Basic Setup tab
    • Connection Type will be: Disabled
    • Set STP for Disabled (Enabled sometimes can cause connection problems)
    • IP Address : 192.168.1.2 (Assuming Primary Router IP is 192.168.1.1)
    • Mask : 255.255.255.0
    • Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (again assuming Primary Router IP is 192.168.1.1)
    • DHCP Server: Disable (not found on newer builds)
    • Assign WAN Port to Switch : Checked or Unchecked - your choice
    • Save Settings
  6. Open the Setup -> Advanced Routing tab
    • Change Type to: Router
    • Save Settings
  7. Open the Security -> Firewall tab
    • You MUST Uncheck all boxes except "Filter Multicast" in "Block WAN Requests" before the next step
    • Disable SPI firewall
    • Save Settings
  8. Open the Administration tab
    • APPLY Settings
    • Click "Reboot" button

V23 builds

I started a page here to make it easy to find this info. So far, as related to version 2.3 and gui setup of this mode only, (no tweaking by telnetting in and running nvram commands), I could only find info in the following links.

My attempt: Bridge Install

Related attempts: Wireless Bridge

External forum thread: Wireless Bridge thread

Using DD-WRT v23 (01/11/05 & 25/12/05) I succeeded with Client bridge mode with WPA changing only the following from the defaults:

Setup > Basic Setup

DHCP Server: Disable

Wireless > Basic Settings

Wireless Mode: Client Bridged
Wireless Network Mode: Mixed

Wireless > Wireless Security

Security Mode: WPA Pre-Shared Key
WPA Algorithms: TKIP
WPA Shared Key: <equal to the other side>

Status > Wireless

(shows list of available networks. Select the proper one, then click Join and Close.)

The other side is a standard internet connected Hyper-WRT 2.0. For the 01/11/05 version both the DD-WRT router and all connected computers appear in the DHCP Active IP Table. With the 25/12/05 version only the connected computer appear.
