For initial flash see All Asus WL-500xx series routers

At the moment DD-WRT (version 23 beta 2) does not support USB, neither USB disks and printers nor webcams. This is supposed to change in the future. (dakka:but you can get around this: install mini, enable jffs, install usb mods as per USB Support)

This is a great little router with two USB 2.0 ports.

Despite some reports of USB EHCI 2.0 drivers not working on the platform, I have successfully enabled the 2.0 EHCI driver while disabling all USB 1.1 driver variants. So far, I have not had any troubles at all using a 2G USB stick as external storage for the router.

WARNING :: USB support for this router is very build specific. Initially, I used an earlier dd-wrt build, and my router did crash/reboot when trying to use the EHCI drivers. However, after upgrading to a recent build (dd-wrt.v24-11218_NEWD_mega.bin), USB 2.0 is working very well.

It is not difficult to setup this router as a NAS. Once the firmware was upgraded to the 11218 build, installing Samba (courtesy of the SambaHD script - the darn thing even autoconfigures your mounts and shared folders), portmap (installed using ipkg-opt) , and unfsd (installed using ipkg-opt) was very simple and straightforward.

The last bit was to write a tiny shell script which is exec'd from the initial.startup script. Initial.startup was created by SambaHD, and all did was to add one line exec'ing my custom script which starts portmap and unfsd.

Later on I will post a full How-To on setting up the WL-500G v2 as a NAS.
