Talk:Repeater Bridge

From DD-WRT Wiki

I have two questions about this repeater bridge mode,

1) After leaving the secondary router (wrt54gl) on overnight in repeater bridge mode, The connection was down this morning. I re-booted the router to get the connection back up. Is this behavior normal? I will try repairing the connection next time to see if that will work. [edit] The connection was down again when I got home from work. I repaired the connection, and that restored it w/o re-booting the router.

2) Is it possible to setup wireless security on the secondary router (wrt54gl), but leave the primary router (wrt54g) unsecured? I plan to attempt this tonight, but I thought I could get valuable input here.

[edit] why are there 2 exactly the same tuts?!

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge
can someone plz merge them?!

[edit] Wrong, they're not the same!

Look at the 3rd paragraph and first pic. The WAN IP and Local IP says it all. If anything, that tutorial is more closely related to Wlan Repeater than it is a Repeater Bridge.. But it is still not "exactly" the same as either of them.

Have I got this right? You'd use UWR to share internet , but not extend the wireless network. Repeater Bridge to extend network.

[edit] Disagree with removal of 'Hard reset'

As per edit. I've set this up on two different routers and the first time could not get it to work until I did a hard soft reset. The second time I did multiple reboots from within the GUI just to be sure it was not working, only then I did a hard soft reset and it worked. Also read in the Security section of the article for other reports of same. --ChuckMcB 00:33, 8 April 2008 (CEST)

[edit] Hard reset will reset all previous steps

A hard reset means holding in the reset button until the router is back to defaults. You cannot add hard reset as the last step. First step, yes...but last step, no. Members of the forum were already getting confused, wondering why their Repeater didn't work. It's because after they got everything configured, they hard reset the router and thus lose all custom settings they just made. That is why I removed the step.

Ahh right, valid point (/me slaps head). Should have been described as a soft reset/power cycle. Power off-power on again. Still 'vote' to put the instruction back in.--ChuckMcB 23:27, 9 April 2008 (CEST)

[edit] Wep Security

I have two routers. the host is a linksys V2 with updated firmare dd-wrt. I have wep 128 bit encryption on it. I needed to extend my signal so I bought a new wrt54gV8 updated firmware to dd-wrt. I followed the instructions and was able to get them to bridge but i was not able to get to the internet. I disabled spi firewall in both but was still unable to get there.

I put the same encryption password and SSID's on both routers because I want to be able to roam.

I am not sure if this has something to do with the wep security or the SSID's etc.... I want to extend but I also want security on my network. can someone advise.

I have not seen anything explaining how to put security on you repeater bridged network in an instructional fashion.

Thanks

[edit] Unable to Ping or Manage the Router When Connected to it

I enjoy a repeater now due to this write-up on the Repeater Bridge. I followed it to the tee and it worked perfectly. Although not for the light of heart, The DD-WRT micro code saved me a few dollars updating an old WRT54Gv6 as a repeater for my Wireless G network. With out the write-up, I'd still be still tinkering with it and wondering why it didn't work.

One thing I've noticed, clients can connect to the new device just fine, get their IP address, and their off to the internet but, if you try to manage or ping it while connect to it it's unreachable.

[edit] rt-n16 - Virtual WLAN SSID not found

Help!

I have followed: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge and http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater

Only twice for less than a minute have I seen the Virtual Interfaces wl0.1 SSID during a network search. Never have I been able to connect to it.

The bridge part works great! No problems there.

How can I get the repeater to Virtual Interfaces wl0.1 SSID to transmit and work?
