Hardware Specifications

Introduction

This wiki applies to all versions of the RT-AC68* routers supported by DD-WRT.

Installation

Prerequisites

  • Download the asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx file from Where do I download firmware?, in the asus-rt-ac68u folder for the current release.
  • Connect your PC via wired ethernet cable to LAN port 1 on the router.
  • (Optional) Set a static IP of 192.168.1.5, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1 on your PC.

Procedure

From AsusWRT webUI

  1. Open a browser and enter your router LAN IP or router URL (http://www.asusrouter.com or https://www.asusrouter.com) to access the WEB GUI.
  2. Enter your login username and password on the login page and then click Sign In.
  3. Navigate to the Advanced Settings -> Administration tab.
  4. Click on Firmware Upgrade tab and Click Upload.
  5. Choose the previously downloaded asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx file and click Open button to upload firmware.
    • Please wait for a few minutes until the upload is completed.

**CAUTION**:  After you start the firmware update, do not try to go online, turn off the router, or do anything else to the router until it finishes restarting.

  6. After the device has rebooted you should be able to login to the default address http://192.168.1.1, where you will be greeted by the change password page of the DD-WRT webUI.
    • You might need to disable/re-enable your network adapter so it picks up a new IP address from the newly installed firmware.
    • NOTE: It is recommended to do a reset of the router by reset button or Administration -> Factory Defaults in DD-WRT webUI after installation.
  7. Set username and/or password and click Change Password (default username is root)
  8. Configure router to your desired needs

Flashing Via Recovery Mode

Use the recovery instructions below to enter Recovery Mode and use either the Restoration Tool or miniCFE web recovery page to install DD-WRT.

Tips/Notes

  • In Canada we had to set the Regulatory Domain to United States, and set Regulatory Mode to Off. Otherwise our bridges and some devices wouldn't connect. Also with the Regulatory Domain set the wireless signal was so weak it wouldn't make it out of the room.
  • By default the wireless will come up as dd-wrt and is open. You should lock it down right away by navigating to wireless -> wireless security.
  • Slightly Different Experience: (RT-AC68U V2, DD-WRT V3.0 Build 44715, 2020-11-03) After the .trx is downloaded to the RT-AC68U, using the ASUS Firmware Update, you will need to reboot while holding the "WPS" button until the "Power LED" begins to flash (10-30 seconds). Wait several minutes for the router to complete the boot process and log in to 192.168.1.1. I believe this process clears or resets the Non-Volatile memory in the router.

Upgrading DD-WRT

Prerequisites

  • Download the asus_rt-ac68u-firmware.trx file from Where do I download firmware?, in the asus-rt-ac68u folder for the current release.
  • Connect your PC via wired ethernet cable to LAN port 1 on the router.
  • (Optional) Set a static IP of 192.168.1.5, netmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1 on your PC.

Procedure

  1. Enter http://192.168.1.1 (or whatever you set your router IP to) into a web browser.
  2. Enter username and password as required.
  3. Go to Administration -> Firmware Upgrade
    • Leave Do Not Reset selected for After Flashing
  4. Click on Browse and select the dir880-webflash.bin file you previously downloaded.
  5. Click Open
  6. Click Upgrade
    • The firmware update starts and the router restarts. The firmware update process takes about five minutes.

**CAUTION**:  After you start the firmware update, do not try to go online, turn off the router, or do anything else to the router until it finishes restarting.

  7. If the webUI does not automatically go back to the Setup -> Basic Setup page, or does not stop at the progress bar page to allow you to click Continue after waiting at least five minutes (i.e. if you get a "Connection Reset" or other error page in your browser), enter http://192.168.1.1 (or whatever your router IP address is) manually or click and hold the "Back" button and select the appropriate history entry.

Revert To Factory Firmware

Preparation

  1. On a Microsoft windows computer download and install the ASUS recovery tool from: https://www.asus.com/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rtac68u/HelpDesk_Download/ (direct link)
  2. Download the original Asus stock firmware from: https://www.asus.com/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rtac68u/HelpDesk_Download/
  3. Set your windows network settings to a static IP of 192.168.1.5, and subnet 255.255.255.0 (Gateway and DNS not needed).

Recovery Mode Flashing Instructions

  1. Power off the unit.
  2. Press and hold on to the WPS button.
  3. While holding down the WPS button, power on the unit.
  4. Keep holding the WPS button until the power led starts to blink a few times.
  5. When the power led starts blinking / flashing, release the WPS button.
  6. Power off the unit.
  7. Press and hold on to the reset button.
  8. While holding down the reset button, power on the unit.
  9. Keep holding the reset button until the power led starts to blink on and off repeatedly. (This means the unit is now in emergency recovery mode)
  10. Plug in your computer with the ASUS recovery tool directly into Lan port 1 on the router.
  11. Run the ASUS Recovery software, and select the stock Asus firmware.
  12. Click the "Upload" button.
  13. The ASUSrecovery software should detect the router, and start to upload the firmware.
    • If the ASUS recovery software doesn't detect the router, try disabling your windows firewall, and also disabling and then re-enabling your network adapter in windows networking settings.
  14. Once the router has flashed and rebooted with the stock firmware, set your network adapter settings back to DHCP. Your computer should pick up an address from the router, and then you can navigate to 192.168.1.1 in the web browser to start re-configuring the router.
